Hello all,

Can anyone refer me to a method of calculating the proper length of damping cables for horizontal tubular bus.

Is there a chart somewhere that gives generic values of size and length?

Thanks for the help.

Whatever fits in the pipe. I have not seen any calculation method. The added weight of any cable in the tubular bus damps the vibrations induced by wind, fault currents or switching. We use whatever AAC or ACSR cable that is available. Check to make sure the sturcture is designed for the combined weight of bus and cable.

IEEE Std 605, IEEE Guid for Design of Substation Rigid-Bus Structures, says the weight should be 10% - 33% of the bus conductor weight.

We've always specified that the damping conductor be the full length of the bus.
