Data and Power in One Conduit

I am building a retail facility and have been asked to have the electrician run a coaxial cable and a romex cable in the same conduit (drop pole) that hangs from the ceiling and supports the TV monitor. The ceiling junction box does have a separation for power from data. Does having the power and data together like this in the drop pole violate the NEC? Would it matter if the power cable was MX?

What are we talking about here?
A conduit/pipe?
Or a "power pole?

In a conduit = violation.
In a power pole approved for power/data (will have a barrier) = no violation

I have no idea what "MX" is, do you mean "MC"?

RX in retail?
That's probably a violation , also. (334.12(A)(1)~ 2002 NEC)

This is a power pole:

Re: Data and Power in One Conduit

The conduit hangs from the ceiling, supports a TV monitor, and does not touch the floor. It does not have receptacles mounted in it. It is not a power pole. You have probably seen these TV monitors advertising merchandise in big box stores.

I meant MC cable, not MX.

I would do it with MC and not even think about it.

The 'conduit' is not a raceway, it is a support pole. ;)

MC and Coaxial cable are both cables that do not require raceways and are allowed to be fished into hollow spaces.

IMO running them both in this support pole is no different then running them both in the same stud bay.

IMO using NM would likely cause interference on the coax.

Sounds like it is a structure to hold the TV.As long as the receptacle and its box are mounted on the outside of this pole i think its ok.

Pierre if we call this support pipe a 'raceway' we cannot hang the TV from it.

IMO the exception you point to does not apply as this pipe is not a raceway it is just a hollow void that the cables can be snaked through.

Data and power can run in the same conduit if you use simtra cable. It comply with NEC and is UL approved. Power conductor is insulated with a barrier that shielded the EMI. I use it all the time in the same conduit with data, voice or phone. They also have outlet boxes with combination of power, data and phone. It's very ease to work with and just one pulling. Let me know if you need more information.
