Inspected a panel for a computer server room. 125 A panel fed from xformer and had an emergency shut-off switch located in the room. Because of my ignorance, I asked why the shut-off switch and was told it was a new change in 2002 NEC. Can some one give me a code section and history on the requirement for the emergency shut off switch?

Re: Data Server EM Switch

You may want to take a look at 645.2 in the '02 as this will give you some direction as to what an Information Technology Room is, and if the room you inspected is such a room.

This is not new to the '02, there were some changes to the language in that section.

Re: Data Server EM Switch

When digging further, it appears that this may be a requirement under 645.10 for an information technology equipment room. Since this room does not have separate HVAC as described in 645.2(2), I am still questioning the requirement for a disconnecting emergency switch. Does it go back the the fact that this panel is fed from a transformer? Trying to understand and learn and apprceiate any thoughts?

Re: Data Server EM Switch

I agree that if they don't meet the seperate HVAC required in 645.2, then they don't need the emergency switch. Then they can't use the wiring methods in 645.5.
