Presently, Con Edison is supplying my clients old building with both ac and dc service, the dc serves the building's 4 elevators. Starting in 2005, Con Ed will no longer be supplying buildings with DC power. What alternitives exist for these elevators? Do they make commercial rectifiers large enough to support elevator motors? What costs could be involved in this? Or do all the motors need to be replaced with ac?
Any imput is greatly appreciated.

Re: DC Elevators to AC

I've seen elevators that used "motor-generators". An AC motor was used to drive a DC generator that powered the elevator. I've also seen rectifier systems used for elevators.

Re: DC Elevators to AC

Well if anybody is interested I found this article, web page

The power company paid for the conversion? Really  Paid for the rectifiers? or the new ac motors/controls/equipment? Do some power companies have incentives or deals where they would share in the cost of this operation because the want to discontinue dc supply? I'm gonna look into this in other areas as well.

Re: DC Elevators to AC

This was about 20 years ago and at the time the POCO was Boston Edison.

As I understood it they paid all costs to provide and install 2 rectifier set ups for elevators in a building I was working in at the time.

It was their choice to discontinue the DC service so why wouldn't they have to cover the costs involved?

I think getting the actual elevator DC motors replaced would be a far greater expense then getting a conveter.

The downtime would be long and you would have to trash the existing DC speed controls and replace them with AC speed controls

i work on few large industrail areas and they do have both motor-generators and inverters for elevators and large dc motors appacations and it work pretty well in this area. and one of company did have a D.C. power plant inside the bulding for all the large dc motors and elevators and few other stuff tied into
