Is the term to "high pot" a 5KV TO 15KV CABLE same as a dc field test or is this something different? If it is what is it?

What is the consensus on this. Should DC Field testing be done or not on shielded 5kva cable installed in underground rigid conduits?

Consult the manufacturer of the cable for testing specifications.

The field rep will supply all required information and data.

Re: DC Field Test / high pot

You should consider testing a new installation.
The test is a DC test and the test voltage is dependent on the kv rating of the cable.
For 5 kv the test voltage is 25kv for 15 minutes
for cable with 90 mils of insulation.
15 kv cable is tested at 55kv for cable with 175 mils of insulation. I suggest you have someone who is fimilar wwith this type of test.

Re: DC Field Test / high pot

The owner of the cable in question should be the determinator of whether it should be tested or not. If they cannot decide, then for your own piece of mind you can certainly test it with a megger and hi-pot. If the run length is considerable then a hi-pot test will certainly be worth the time it takes to test. Also, if outage potential is high and not tolerable by customers served, then a hi-pot test will be in your best interests. However, if it will take less time to pull in a new piece in the event of failure, a hi-pot test may not be economical.

As far as the term "DC field test" is concerned, I have not heard that used in relation to a hi-pot test. But that certainly doesn't mean that it isn't.
