DC MG-set as DC voltage regulator?

Does anyone know about using (DC) MG-sets as a power supply or voltage regulator for (DC) MCCs? Im working on a citywide DC elimination project and have discovered that at first glance, these configurations can easily be mistaken for MG set AC to DC converters - but in fact are instead a DC motor coupled to a DC generator.

I spoke to an elevator tech and he explained it simply as a voltage regulator (power supply to EEs) for elevator hoist MCCs. Can anyone provide me with a wiring diagram, or some reference material with a better understanding?

My main concern is considering this one load - MG-set feeding the hoist, or is it considered two loads - MG-set + hoist.

According to this source, the prime mover - the motor coupled to the generator is the main load.
