That used to be common in swichgear (ITE Imperial is one ICan remember).
Considerable DC current is required to "pick up" the contactor. Once you have the contactor closed you don't want all that current going through the coil, it will be noisy, get hot and may permanently magnatize the steel in contactor (meaning it may not open when you push the off or stop button). Some contrators use seperate coils some use tapped.
Contactors or starters with a mechanical latching system don't have that problem.:roll:
