422.12 Central Heating Equipment. Central heatingequipment other than fixed electric space-heating equip-
ment shall be supplied by an individual branch circuit.
Exception No. 1: Auxiliary equipment, such as a pump,
valve, humidifier, or electrostatic air cleaner directly asso-
ciated with the heating equipment, shall be permitted to be
connected to the same branch circuit.
Exception No. 2: Permanently connected air-conditioning
equipment shall be permitted to be connected to the same
branch circuit.

Dedicated circuit

Thanks Rob, that's the way I do it but never knew if it was required,kind of like the Refer.have always put it on a dedicated circuit although not required,the new condo I just moved into has it on the appliance circuit.

If you mean one of the small appliance branch circuits, that wouldn't be allowed by the rules covering SABC's even if the central heating rule in 422.12 didn't exist.

kwired, the poster is referring to the refrigerator in his condo not the furnace. The refrigerator is required to be installed on one of the required SABC's or installed on an individual branch circuit. See 210.52(B)(1) and Exception #2.

FWEIW, Los Angeles allows gas furnaces to be cord connected and also on a standard branch circuit! Most just use a 14awg flat air conditioner cord. Keep in mind it's only a max 1/3hp blower motor on most cases.

Does Los Angeles have an amendment to the NEC that allows this or is it just an unwritten allowance?
