Dedicated Space Over Battery Cabinet

110.26(E) requires dedicated space for SWBDs, SWGR, Panelboards and MCC's.

I am of the belief, that the equipment that needs this dedicated space would be listed as one of these pieces of equipment.

A battery cabinet for a UPS that has an output breaker mounted in it (listed as IT equipment), does not make it a panelboard needing dedicated space.

Do you disagree?
 
I agree. My belief is that that requirement is based on allowing room for the future installation of conduits for new circuits. That is why that particular list of equipment is included in the rule, and transformers, disconnect switches, UPS's, VFDs, enclosed circuit breakers, and other items are not on the list. Once one of these items is installed and operating, you will never need to install another conduit into the item.

If the requirement is based on allowing room for future circuits, then why is it that the dedicated space requires 6 feet free of foreign systems, when you can fit a factory elbow of most conduit sizes within a 2 foot region?

I guess it's because you never know how much room you will need. In the NEC handbook, this section says that the reserved space permits busways, conduits, raceways, and cables to enter the equipment. Busway tends to take up a lot of room.
