I had recently taken one of the practice tests in the NEC class that I am taking. One of the questions that I had answered incorrect was: The definition of a dwelling area has the following features. The multiple choice answers were

a: Permanent provisions for cooking

b: a basement or storage area

c: a space for eating, sleeping, and recreation

d: both a and c

I answered the question d. The definition in Article 100 in the 2005 NEC book for dwelling unit was: A single unit, providing complete and independent living facilities for one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation.

I argued that a living area would be consistant with recreation because in the living room in most home you will find a TV, VCR, and or DVD player, but usually some type of recreation. Could I get some feedback on this subject.

It is a badly worded question, in that it intentionally tries to trick you. That should not be the purpose of an exam. I agree with rcarroll's answer and reasoning.

Don't most tests try to trick you ? They did not give you a choice that included everything.I too picked d but the recreation part is what messes this up.All other choices were not complete.

I can?t help but wonder how those that got the right answer would look at the choices.

How do you like this question?
Which of the following is/are required to have GFCI protection?
(a) With-in six feet of a laundry or utility sink
(b) With-in six feet of a wet-bar
(c) A receptacle in the hall
(d) Both a and b

Both questions are designed to make sure that you read the complete section before making a decision. Neither question is designed to trick anyone.
The answer to the question above is a.
Most miss this one also due to the fact that they didn?t read the complete section or don?t fully understand that it is the sink that the measurement is to start from.

Recreation is not mentioned in the definition of dwelling therefore the inclusion of the word disqualifies ?c? from the answer.
If the word recreation was in the definition or thought that it could be included then every Gold?s Gym in the nation would be treated as a house as far as the electrical.
