Article 110.26(2) (1999 NEC in California), dealing with outdoor electrical equipment, states

"The clearance requirements shall include the zone described in Section 110-26(a). No Architectural appurtenance or other equipment shall be located in this zone."

The Tract developer is planting bushes in front of the outdoor panel (more than 6 inches out from the building). My dictionary, and the web dictionary, seems to say this is a violation.

Is it?

thanks for your help -

Re: definition of wording

Yep. But it's 110-26(f)(2).

It's an easy problem to solve. Just get the owner to sign a pre-permission slip, stating that you have permission, should there ever be a need to work on that panel, to cut down the bushes, and to send the bill for replacement bushes to the landscape architect. :D

Ran in to this once on a rewire.Bushes in front of 2 panels to 2 units.I just looked at the inspector (we know each other well) and said its your call i have saw zal :D in hand

Re: definition of wording

Bushes aren't all that bad, it's better than carrying a boat or a pump with you to access or service the load center.

Charlie, depending on the depth, 404.8 probably. (I only know of one person this would not be an issue with)

I don't know if we could use 110.26 or not. ;)

Re: definition of wording

That gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "the depth of the working space shall not be less than....". But do they mean at high tide or low tide? :D

Re: definition of wording

Hi Roger,

I think these would apply because of the safety hazard of standing in water and climbing over loose and slippery rocks.

Accessible, Readily (Readily Accessible).
Capable of being reached quickly for operation, renewal, or inspections without requiring those to whom ready access is requisite to climb over or remove obstacles or to resort to portable ladders, and so forth.

Service Equipment ? Disconnecting Means
230.70 (A)(1) Readily Accessible Location.
The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.

110.26 Spaces About Electrical Equipment.
Sufficient access and working space shall be provided and maintained about all electric equipment to permit ready and safe operation and maintenance of such equipment.
