I brought this up in the vending machine thread. I thought I would post it separate because it applies across the board.
I requested an informal interpretation from NFPA. I should have asked about the 2005 NEC, since that was what the discussion was, but I have the 1999 NEC on the brain since that's what we enforce. Below is my question and response:
Is it the intent that the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition(as referenced in the Manual of Style Section 3.2.1.2; July 2004
edition) be used for definitions of terms not defined in Article 100 of the 1999 NEC, for purposes of enforcement by an AHJ?

You are correct, however, in 1999 I believe that the 10th edition would have been used. As with other documents that are referenced in NFPA Codes and Standards you would use the edition that was in print at the time of development and publishing.
