IMHO, the customer's problems are more likely to be related to EMP (electromagnetic pulse) created voltage spike damage to equipment, especially solid state devices.

The memory, or lack thereof, of magnetization is not a concern, by comparison.

Re: Degaussing - Related to Lightning

In my experience it's neither unless there was a nearby nuclear detonation.

The likley cause is either your customers imagination or a nearby lightning strike entered via the service drop, telephone line or CATV/antenna/dish. I'll bet there is no surge protection. Being in the telephone business, I've noticed many times that electronic equipment is not always made inoperative under these conditions but can be damaged enough that there will be problems. If the situation is allowed to continue (lack of proper grounding and surge protection) the equipment will ultimately be made inoperative by subsequent hits.

I suspect though that in this case because the problems are so vague and affect very different pieces of equipment the customer may be imagining this or it's just coincidence. Whose idea was this degaussing theory? I will agree that lighting can do strange and unpredictible things but unless you can pin down the cause I would recommend surge protection at the service as well as each piece of equipment. Make sure that the telephone, CATV and other equipment is properly protected and grounded also.

Re: Degaussing - Related to Lightning

Although I don't see a question, I would like to include my 2 cents. Televisions do sometimes need deguassed (I assume monitors also do, but I have never seen one that required this). Symptoms would be the wrong colors. For example, the news anchors face might be purple on one side, and green on the other. (This is different that a TV that just needs the "tint" adjusted because the colors aren't consistant on all areas of the screen).

Don't try leaving your TV lay on its side all night, or it will need deguassed. The reasoning I have heard is the earth's magnetic field induces a semi-permenant magnetic field in the TV's screen mask. This throws the electrons slightly off as they travel to the screen, and they wind up hitting the wrong color.

Actually, all TV's and monitors I have ever seen have a buildt-in deguasser that fires when the set is first turned on. It usually eliminates the need to deguass sets.

It might be possible for a lighting strike to induce magnetic field that would require deguassing. But, the symptom would be the wrong color, not poor reception, etc.
