customer home has just a meter socket outside with a main breaker panel in there garage.

im getting mixed answrs as far as to install a main breaker enclosure outside for disc means.

if i install the main breaker enclosure outside, what would be the recommend installation without changing the meter socket.

why do you have to install a main outside? is it required by your local code? where I am, no main is required outside if the panel is within 12' of the meter base.

the meter socket is on one side of the house, the mainbreaker panel is on the oppsite side in the garage 30ft away..those are the conditions.

Then you are fine. The main disconnect is located at the neareast point of entrance to the building being served.

A label at the meter enlcosure identifying the location of the main disconnect would be nice, but not required by code.

my boss tells me that i must have a main disconnect outside in case of fire.
meter alone isnt suffiecient.

the home has 2 conduits coming up from the ground.

the boss told me i must install a gutter then, go fromthere to the new main breaker, then to the meter socket.

is he planning on re-running the wire to the panel? once you set a main outside, the panel in the house becomes a sub-panel, you will need to feed it with 4 wire and seperate the grounds and neutrals, they can only be bonded together at the main disconnect....

Unfortunately, your boss is wrong.

The arrangement of the service is a design consideration. Your bosses suggestion is one that would work. I would probably do it another way.

Keep in mind that all the conductor terminations in the garage panel will have to be changed if you add a main at the meter. In short, you will have to remove the main bonding jumper from the panel, isolate the grounded conductors from the grounding conductors, and bond the EGC's to the panel. The feeder to the garage will need an EGC as well.

You may also need to re-route, or re-create a grounding electrode system. If the service is grounded at the meter, your all set. If the service is grounded at the panel in the garage, your out of luck. See 250.24(A)(1) for that issue.

so is my boss incorect, as far as telling me that i have to have disc means outside...hes trying to make more $$ or something.

is there code infla that you have to have disc means outside
