Regarding demo. If you had to remove downlights in a gypboard clg. where the cable went directly into the fixture(no box) and the cablehad to remain. How would you safe-off/abandoned the cable at each light fixturelocation. Box would have to be installedbut then an access door??? Thanks. Best to just pull cable out I assume.

Are you going to remove all the lights controlled by a specifiic swith? If so you could kill the circuit there ( remove form switch and wire nut ) and still wire nut the conductors off in the ceiling.

I like to make sure that an abandonded circuit is dead or the part of the circuit to be abandoned is dead.

Yes.

Where you wire nut conductors in ceiling you would have to box there though, right? They would also need access door at each locations.

No, if I kill the circuit and it's just abandoned wire then no access is needed. A lot of places ( homes ) the idea of access doors wouldn't work very well because the owner wouldn't like it.

I am assuming there must be a feed thru to something else otherwise there would be no need to keep the cable.

Unless you can fish across a new cable then you will need a box at each joint and it must be accessible. I would just mount a box where the light was and put a blank cover. Unfortunately there will be these blank plates in the ceiling. Yuk---

I would definitely see if I can refeed the other circuit or switch leg. They will have to patch the ceiling anyway.

You should be able to pull a wire thru using the cable that is there. Use it as a pull thru the ceiling joists and you may have to make an extra hole or two to get down the wall. See what the home owner will accept

Thanks. This is a commercial job. If the cable is not feeding other lights than is could just be abandoned wire nutted and left in the ceiling with no box?

i always find figuring demo disconnects and safe off of circuits to be tough to account for accurately.....too many unknown variables.

If the cable is dead then it can be abandoned. Tape it off-- just make sure they wont use it again. I will also go to the switch box and cut that switch leg tight to where it enters the box. This insures that it won't be energized by anyone
