Hi, Is a dentist office considered a health-care occupancy? Needing hospital grade wiring/devices? Have never bid on health care facilities before. There will be four chairs in separate rooms, although two of the rooms will have no equipment as they are for future needs. Thanks

Needing hospital grade wiring/devices?

Hospital grade devices are not required. A 517.13 wiring method will be required in patient care areas. Slab on grade will require IMC, RMC or AC?MC listed for wet locations for the chairs.

Nitrous oxide is a relative analgesia; NEC 517 classifies relative analgesia as an Anesthetizing Location. NEC 517.61(C)(2):

(2) Receptacles and Attachment Plugs. Receptacles and
attachment plugs installed and used in other-than-hazardous
(classified) locations shall be listed ?hospital grade? for
services of prescribed voltage, frequency, rating, and number
of conductors with provision for connection of the
grounding conductor. This requirement shall apply to
2-pole, 3-wire grounding type for single-phase, 120-, 208-,
or 240-volt, nominal, ac service.

I agree, this requirement is quite oftern over looked for dental offices that use Nitrous Oxide.

Also keep in mind that a battery power lighting unit is required in the areas where Nitrous Oxide is used as well. (See 517.63(A))
