The contestant was presented with a board containing two 3-way switches, a lampholder, and a green, white, and red "home run". All the wiring, other than ground and neutral was done using red wire. The wiring between devices was inside plastic loam and wire tied so that you could not "wiggle" one end of the wire and see another end move.
The contestant was told that this was supposed to be a standard 3-way switch circuit, but there was a problem with it. They were told to use a continuity tester or ohmmeter to find the problem.
There were given 15 minutes to trace it out.
ANSWER: the right hand switch had been subjected to laparoscopic surgery and did not make contact in the lower position.
