What is the advantage of running a piece of equipment slower than it was designed for? The speed it must be used at to perform it's function. Ramp for low startup current draw is the only reason I can think of. After that you control the flow of product into it to maintain optimum performance.

Why do designers put the weakest link at the end of the chain when it should be at the beginning?

Life span, like your truck engine. Lower rpm over time equals longers repair intervals and less maintenance per unit of product out put.

Nice one, when you decrease the out put of one item another has to pick up the slack to maintain a given output, Like the transmission. Then they need to reduce the added heat in the transmission from heavier load to maintain output( speed).

SOMETIMES there are mechanical reasons. Saws are a good example. Different species of wood may require different blade or infeed speeds due to the effect the wood has on the teeth. So the saw system is designed for the maximum throughput at the softest wood it might see, then adjusted down for harder woods to avoid damaging the blades. I’ve seen the same thing with rock crushers because the material feeding into them can change and that affects their performance.

But for sure, there are a lot of people who over design things for no good reason.
