Can anyone tell me where it states the a desk shall not occupy space in an electrical room. If I remember, there is a spacific Quote in the NEC reguarding this. Thanks

You can have a desk, a chair, a computer work station, a fridge, a sofa, a high definition TV, and a ping pong table in an electric room. All that is required is that the working clearance be maintained.

We put desks and stools or chairs in all of our electrical rooms. Where else are you supposed to work on things? Much easier than taking everything back to the shop to work on. If you're talking about a desk that somebody will sit at all day, then you might have a safety concern. Many of our gear lineups require class 1 or 2 PPE with the doors closed, which applies to a large part of the room then.

I used to think that it said electrical rooms shall be used for no other purpose, but I believe that it said that the required space shall be used for no other purpose. I actually used to have my office in an electric room, nice and toasty in the winter, not so nice in the summer.

Commercial buildings may be required to not use electrical and/or mechanical rooms for any other purpose, but I think that is a fire code issue.
But then again, I could be talking out of my butt...

From a fire code issue, there is nothing against having a desk in an electrical room, just maintain the clearances.

Now, if you had a bed, refrigerator and hibachi going, there'd be a problem. :)

Problem? That's my dream office.:D

I should have been more spacific. I'm talking about a 600 amp service w/transformers, sub panels and a wall of communications equipment. And it is being used as an office.

There is no rule in the NEC that would prohibit that, presuming only that the working clearances are maintained.
