The rules on this are the same from commercial to residential.

Not just "drive a ground rod", you need to adhere to 250.32(A), which refers to 250.50. You need a Grounding Electrode System at the detached structure.

How close to the detached building is the service? I believe you could use those ground rods--if they meet code...

If your a commercial guy. You may not be familiar with the cables frequently used . Just a suggestion , but direct burial aluminum cable is just about as cheap and you can use a 90 or 100 amp breaker. We even ask for garage direct burial cable at the supply house.

Might need to upsize that (disconnect) to 60 Amp.

225.39(B) . . .not more than two 2-wire circuits . . . not less than 30 amperes.

225.39(D) All others . . . not less than 60 amperes.

Hear, hear, Buck. I would be inclined to install a 60A or 100A Main Breaker Panelboard outside the detached structure, and sleeve the feeder as URD into it. Cleanest and easiest, IMO.

FWIW the NEC would allow any size feeder to this garage, only the disconnecting means needs to be rated 60.

So as extreme example you could have a 2 pole 20 amp breaker at the house, run 12 AWG to the garbage and supply a panel with a back fed 60 amp breaker as the required disconnecting means.

I just read his threads and I have to say I really Love that guy!

I had some great emails with him as he got sicker, he and my Dad where both Marines they also passed from the same disease. They were a lot a like in many ways. Bennie sent me one of his early Marine pictures it was pretty cool.

why would you want to supply "garbage" with any electricity? :)

since i have copper cold and hot water lines in the garage, can i run the egc to the copper pipes instead of a ground rod??
