This is the first detached garage that i have done. Need a little help. Conduit has been ran from house to shop. They want 2 20 amp circuits, 1 for outlets and 1 for lighting. My ? is do I need a sub panel or can i run the 2 circuits to a j box inside shop then split off of them. Thanks for any help.

I agree with George Don't use one neutral and land the hots in the supply panel on opposite legs (two breaker next to each other) and then in the garage run them into a box close to entrance with either a two-pole switch or two single pole 20 amp rated switch's (means of disconect) then feed each circuit as needed.

No, (A) applies to one circuit, which is the reason for suggesting a single, shared neutral.

I believe Wayne means "don't use two neutrals. His remark suggests he thinks you already ran two 2-wire cables, if I'm correct.

Re: Detached Garage

Yes Larry you are correct, It was late :D

But it is in 225.30

225.30 Number of Supplies.
Where more than one building or other structure is on the same property and under single management, each additional building or other structure served that is on the load side of the service disconnecting means shall be supplied by one feeder or branch circuit unless permitted in 225.30(A) through (E). For the purpose of this section, a multiwire branch circuit shall be considered a single circuit.
The bold is where you can run two circuits but count them as only one, ungrounded conductors still have to be disconnected at the wires entrance to the building but no GE is required. :D

Re: Detached Garage

I just found out my state is going to require me to use 2 ground rods. So my only option is to put in some type of sub panel. Looks like the 12 wire is going to get pulled out of the pipe and re pull with # 10. Oh well. Thanks for the input.
