Detached Structure and Disconnect Means

Can someone explain to me where all the 6 disconnect rules may apply.

Example : If we have a detached structure and it has a 60A panel in it ( lets say a garage ). Can they get away with the 6 disconnect rule or is a disconnect means required at the garage.

In other words, can they have a 6 space panel with single pole breakers in it and no disconnect on the feeders to the seperate structure and still comply with 225.31

Would 225.33 would allow 6 single pole breakers in a sub-panel to the garage above with a disconnection means on the feeders to the sub-panel.

408.36 is met at the panel inside the dwelling and is on a 2 pole breaker so that is met so we are not dealing with overcurrent protection at the detached structure. I am trying to figure out if the 6 throw applies here and no disconnect means needed on the feeders at the new structure.

IMHO, Prior to the '08 Code, 408.36 would have required you to meet the 2 pole breaker rule at the detached garage. Under '08 the 6 dsconnect rule would apply.

408.36(A) says on the supply side, I would guess under the 2005 NEC the supply side can be at the main panel feeding the sub-panel. But the question i pose is does 225.31 require a disconnect means at the seperate structure for disconnection of the feeders at the detached sub panel.....not for OCP but just to meet the disconnection requirement.

And if they have a MLO panel does the 6 disconnect rule apply to this panel or only power panels under the 2005 NEC

The code rule requires that the disconnecting means be suitable for use as service equipment. In many cases this rule requires the use of a single main as many panels are listed as suitable for use as service equipment only when a single main is installed.
