detached unfinished garage--Damp Location?

Would an unfinished (no sheetrock) detached residential garage be considered a damp location? Looked through my books and coud not find anything definite. I need to add an outlet, light and recpt for garage door opener. I wanted to use metal boxes and mc cable inside this residential garage. It is has siding, doors, and a shingled roof. Thanks in advance for any input.

How would you apply the Article 100 definition (look in the "L" section) to your particular environment?

Most above-grade garages probably aren't, although I've seen other garages (more of the hill-side drive-out basement) which are VERY damp.

Look at it this way, would you consider a attached garage a damp location? I certainly would not...

Agreed. Not damp location. It would be the same as an attic space-- you wouldn't consider that damp location. Heck, I've been in some crawl spaces that probably should be damp locations but I have never heard of anyone being called on that either.

I think the only answer that counts is that of the AHJ.

The inside of my detached garage is pretty dry. I used NM and THHN in EMT when I wired it up.

I wouldn't call it damp, but it's an AHJ call.

The inside of my garage is damp. But then, so is the outside. Geographical hazard of living in Seattle, I suppose.

Thanks for the input. The AHJ got back to me and his call was damp location and he didnt even look at the location.

So using logic, if the garage is attatched to a house its still a damp location, so I would have to call the house a damp location also... Hmmm first for everything I guess...
