Situation:

Detattched garage fed with a 4-wire cable to a new panel. Does NEC article 225 require a main breaker? Also, if the garage panel will have more than two circuits, is there a size requirement for the feed to the garage?

Thanks.

Re: detattched garage-main breaker?

Every remote building or structure requires a disconnecting means except for a 3 way to residential out building. The disconnecting means can be up to six switches or circuit breakers.
Its much easier to install a single main breaker and backfeed it with the retaining clip. the size of a service depends on the number of circuits. Art 225 gives the sizes, my code book is put away at the moment.

Re: detattched garage-main breaker?

225.31 Disconnecting Means. Means shall be provided for disconnecting all ungrounded conductors that supply or pass through the building or structure.

225.36 Suitable for Service Equipment. The disconnecting means specified in 225.31 shall be suitable for use as service equipment.
Exception: For garages and outbuildings on residential property, a snap switch or a set of 3-way or 4-way snap switches shall be permitted as the disconnecting means.
