Generally I set switch boxes in residential construction at 42" to bottom.

Heres what I have to work with in a detached outbuilding I'm wiring, switches and receps will be the same height.

Contractor has set a 2x4 on the flat horizontally around the interior of the building. It is placed on the face of the 6"x6" post. The bottom of the 2x4 is 43" off the slab.

Was planning on using 4x4 metal boxes with side bracket and mud ring. Fastened to the bottom I end up at about 41" to c/ l of device which to me seems low.

Fastening to the top puts me at about 48.5 which seems high.

Moving the stringers is not an option, air nailed on ,all 180'.

Thoughts appreciated.

If you do not need to meet accessibility rules like ADA, I do not see any fundamental problem. The NEC does not care AFAIK. (Keep it under 6'. :))

No ADA compliance.

Just used to what I've been doing for so many years, neither one feels right when reaching to operate a switch.

Unless you are concerned about somebody coming in in total darkness and trying to feel for the switch, I think the building's users will adapt to it quite well.
There is quite a range of "normal" height among installers.

We've done many jobs where the standard wall switch height was 3'2". Personally I would go with the 48.5" height.

41, 49"... which way is easier to install afa drilling or fishing in wire if need be? What does the customer want, if any preference?

2x4" face nailed to 2x6's... if you need some 2" 1900 box extensions, PM me.

no he doesn't, he is attaching boxes directly to the horizontal 2x4's, his problem is those are at same height he normally installs switches at forcing him to put his switches a little higher or lower then usual.
