Why do dual function AFCI breakers cost more over the normal combo type? I mean both have CTs, and I can't see any major differences in the circuit board to lower 50/30ma down to 5ma.

Not all of the "combination" type AFCIs have ground fault protection. All of the original "branch circuit/feeder" type did. but at last two manufacturers no longer have it in their combination type.

Greater demand allows for greater selling price, regardless of cost to make.
Or it can work the other way as well. Greater demand means more production of a certain product, and it cost more to change the production line to make a different product for a day then set up again for the other product you make on the same line the majority of the time. Or they just have different line for each product but more lines for the one that sells the highest volume.

Look at cost of 4 foot fluorescent tubes in the past vs a 3 foot tube that is otherwise about the same thing. Volume of 4 foot tubes sold was very much higher and they cost maybe 1/4 of what a 3 foot tube cost even though the 3 foot tube used less of the same materials.
