Hi Everyone

I know from the NEC code that I should put suitable disconnecting means within sight from and readily accessible from the air conditioning equipment. This is totally understood for window type A/C units. Now for split type A/C unites, do I need to put one disconnecting means within sight from the outdoor roof unit (which contains the compressor motor) only or I need to put another disconnecting means in sight from the indoor unit (which contains the evaporator fan)? In other words do I need one or two disconnecting means?

Many Thanks in advance,

I would say that you need two disconnects.

One for the outside unit and one inside for the blower.

That said, however, I have never seen anyone put in a disconnect for the inside unit, but it is required.

I say the outside requires one, keeping in mind working clearance or a breaker lock is required also.As far as the NEC goes if the inside one is line of sight from the panel none is required, but some mechanical jurisdictions still require one within a specified distance from the unit even if within line of sight.
