did i build this apartment service efficiently

i recently completed a quad plex. there were a total of (5) 125 amp services for this building -- (4) apartments, (1) house panel for ext. lighting and access gate. i put mains in all the panels. i set up my service as follows from the gound up: (5) panels; connected to (5) meter sockets via offset nipples; connected to gutter box. out of the gutter box i went up with (3) 400 mcm's. i did a load analysis and came up with almost 400 amps of load after lighting, heat, etc. no gas to be used at all here. i bonded my neutral and gec in the gutter box and installed interlock system as required.

here's the question:

did i maximize my savings? could i have done this job cheaper, more efficient? if all my panels were 125 amps, did i have to go to 400 amps on the riser? i typically don't do alot of apartments, so i am in the dark here. could i have saved $$$ by using a meter bank?

thanks for the advice.

I would have used a meter bank. Even if it costs more than the individual pieces you would have saved money on labor. The service entrance conductors are sized according to the calculated load. How did you come up with 400 kcmil, for a 400amp calculated load?
