Hello,
I was requested to install several utility receptacles in a diesel fueling building. I have read in the 2005 NEC, Article 514 section 514.3(A), that if the AHJ determines that the liquid has a flash point 100 degrees F or higher, that the location shall not be required to be classified. As I read this, this facility can be wired without being treated as a normal gasoline dispensing facility. I know this is up to the AHJ, but I know that diesel fuel has a FP of 100 degrees and higher depending on the type. I am going to wire it as a class 1 division 1 facility, in the event they do one day store gasoline, and I am not trying to split hairs, but this seems like a gray area. Has anyone come across a similar situation, and what did you do?

Diesel fuel is stored in 50+ gallon quantities routinely on emergency generators. I have never seen anyone provide Class 1 wiring around these units. Everyone agrees the NEC does not require it and ...... well...... we don't do it (wire it CL1).

Even operating under the assumption that it may be converted to gasoline in the future, I wouldn?t arbitrarily wire the facility for Class I, Division 1. Review Table 514.3(B)(1) carefully and note how little Division 1 is actually required. FIRST document the area classification [500.4(A)] ? THEN design & install.
