The box needed to be rated for the location, it can be metal or plastic if you're using NM cable.

NM cable and residential, almost always use plastic unless there is some physical load to consider.

Plastic in an exterior wall [you do not say whether the box opens interior (room receptacle) or exterior (outside light or receptacle)] will not rust like metal boxes do here in the humid rusty east!

When dealing with vinyl siding and exterior boxes, I usually use the j-channel types like from Arlington.
