Actually those aren't gaps but black plastic couplings that fit over the round ends of the duct. Basically you just bang them on with a hammer, insert the next length, and push it into the coupling. If needed you bang the end of the next piece in with a block of wood and a lump hammer. That's it, the back fill does the rest.

I was thinking the same thing, start at 320 and stop at 400.

Well then in that case, EMT and FMT are not types of conduit.

Neither is ENT although I don't think it has been mentioned at all yet.

There is also aluminum, brass, stainless, PVC coated RMC and maybe even a few other types, There is a fiberglass raceway I don't know much about it and I don't see an article that specifically applies to it in ch3 2008NEC either.
