Hello, I'm new to the forum so please be patient! I have a need to monitor and control the differential air pressure between a Class 1 Div 1 room and an adjacent non-classified space. If I mount my controller in the unclassified space and only run a reference tube into the classified area does my controller still need to be intrinsically safe? Does the reference tube (1/4") compromise the Class 1 barrier?

Re: Differential pressure and Class 1 area

You are operating in the NFPA 496 realm with this question and, from your description, it appears you have a ?Type X? application. There are some very rigorous requirements for this type installation and I?d definitely suggest reviewing NFPA 496.

Having said that, as you have described the installation, the controller would be not need to be intrinsically safe. Depending on the method of installation and the means of measurement, the reference tube may indeed establish the boundary. I usually remind folks that Section 500.4(A) requires, among other things, that the boundary to be properly documented and it needs to be done by an experienced person.
