I think the question on a digital display is not an electrical question.

These are measuring instruments powered from a 120 V outlet via a 3 prong AC plug. If nothing else use an extension cord. But it would be better to get an electrician to install a 120 V AC outlet that is powered from the main disconnect on the machine.

Installation is really mechanical and getting the scales appropriately installed. Scales simply plug into the instrument.

We have a Sony that has lasted many years.

is it a positioning DRO? then yes, you just plug it in, and yes, there is more to it than just a plug.

We are not talking machine control. It is simply a readout. Usually purchased as a three azis (X, Y, Z). These are very simple plug and use devices.

The electronics and display box needs to be mechanically mounted. The linear glass or magnetic scales need to be mechanically mounted. The plugs on the ends of the cables from the scales need to be plugged into the correct connectors on the display box.

Plug the 120 V AC cord into an outlet. Turn the instrument switch on and you should have a functional system. No need for an electrician. It may be desirable to power the readout from a wall outlet so that it is powered all the time. These are usually incremental and not absolute gages.

What is desirable is a person skilled in doing a good mounting of the scales. Probably not an electrician.

This is possibly less difficult than putting together a component audio system, other than scale mounting.

Is this a continuation of off topic content from some other thread:?

I remember the OP and it included a pic. Was closed by Mod.

At least this time now I saw the post that started it all. Now I know I'm not insane from the times there've been other threads that looked like they picked up somewhere I couldn't tell!

The thread was closed, but to me it seemed the questioner deserved an answer. It was not an electrical question, but one of a suggestion for equipment to make dimensional measurements from persons that might have experience.

So I provided one answer for an instrument with which I have had some moderately long time positive experience.

Understand, now. Not knowing about any other thread, wondered what you had been intoxicating yourself with when first read OP.;)
