If you use a dimmer switch listed for both incandescent and fluorescent fixtures, I don't see a problem with it controlling a dimming compact fluorescent lamps.

the problem is Westinghouse states in there catalog not for use with electronic dimmers all company's I called said it is not a problem to use their dimmer but the only thing my inspector will except is a reostat dimmer and the company has to have it listed for use with cfl even the simple glide dimmer from lutron is an electronic one.

According to this website http://www.nolico.com/saveenergy/dimmable_lamps.htm
you don't need any kind of special dimmer, they're designed to work with ordinary incandescent dimmers.

"Our Dimmable Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs are compatible with most standard timer, motion detector, photocell sensor, and dimming circuits. With these bulbs, there is no need to purchase expensive "Fluorescent Compatible" timers, motion detectors, photocell sensors or dimmers. These will work with products which indicate that they are for incandescent only. They have a dimming range from 100% to 20% with no flicker or hum! The wait is over for high quality dimmable CFLs, and we have them at the best price!"

I think his inspector is thinking that dimmable CFLs need a special dimmer, like standard dimmable flourescent ballasts do.

yes that is exactly my problem one of two things, the inspector understands something I don't or he is looking for any point just not to except the bulbs,

I had a similar issue. There was no inspector involved, but I had a heck of a time trying to figure out how I was supposed to dim some CFLs for a house. The packaging doesn't say how to dim them, or what to use.

The Lutron dimmers I had on hand said in no uncertain terms they were not for dimming fluorescents - they had not rewritten their instructions since the new dimmable CFLs had come out. Perhaps this is the source of the inspector's confusion.

Normal, run-of-the-mill dimmers are supposed to dim the dimmable CFLs. He should take the manufacturer's word for it, they created the lamp.

If it's written by the manufacturer, then it's covered per 110.3(B), or at least one should believe.

thats the problem, it is not written any where and the dimmer manufactures lutron specifically says they are aware that when you bring down the dimmer to the dimmest the bulb flickers so it does not meat their standards all tho I contacted U.L. and asked them if this was part of their test they said yes and they approve it.
