We have a dimmer job and we had wireways in out drawings coming out of the dimmer racks. The contractor is suggesting using a cable tray. To my knowledge, the code does not allow to use regular THWN or THHN wire in a cable tray unles you use TC cable. I'm I wrong?

I don't think you are. However, if you use TC cable it may be of concern what else is to be in the tray with it. I know I've seen something like this before but I can't put my finger on a code article......anyone wanna pitch in?

You are permitted to use any of the wiring methods listed in Table 392.3(A) with cable tray. Individual THHN or TWHN conductors #12, #10, and #8 are not permiited to be installed in cable tray unless they are part of a wiring method listed in the Table.

Take a look at 392.3 for uses permitted for cable tray.
