On a 4-way light system can just one of the 3-way or 4-way switches be replaced with a 3-way or 4-way dimmer switch to dim the lights that will maintain the setting of dimness when the other switches are turned on? Just one master dimmer that maintains its setting regardless of which switch turn on the lights. I only want one dimmer

Or does the dimmer have to go at the end or beginning of the circuit?

Welcome to the forum. Yes, you can use just one dimmer regardless of how many 4 ways are inbetween your 2 3 ways. I wont say "all" ways in which 3 ways are wired would work with the dimmer beginning or end, but the standard way, the dimmer can replace either 3 way switch.

Note that the traveller orientation on dimmer 3 ways is usually backward of a regular 3 way switch, so if the HO wants the switches to be in the same position as before with lights on or off, you may have to swap around the traveller wires.

As Dennis said no 4 way dimmers exist.
You could put a 3 way on each end but they wouldn't like it.
Fight over control of output.

I guess if we get into the Maestro system you can dim from every location but that is not what the op wanted, as I read it
