Indirectly yes. All dimmers have a wattage limit. The formula Esq / R is used to formulate the wattage value and we all know this combination will create heat. Thus not only are they designed to dim your lights but how much heat they can dissipate. If you read them they have the side fins to dissipate the heat and when removed the wattage value drops. They use the total area of the metal face as a heat sink.
