Dimming LED retrofits

Merry Christmas

I have a residential job where there will be numerous dimmers. 21 to be exact.

I’m using Lutron DVCL-153P dimmers.
Many of the configurations are 90 to 120/130 watts.

The dimmers are rated at 150W LED.
The instructions show that with the LED no reduction needs to be taken in wattage when the side fins are removed.

I am noticing that the ones with fins removed are operating warmer than the others.

The customer has noticed it as well and is questioning the safety of them.

I like the performance of this particular dimmer which is also available in 250W capacity but at a considerably higher cost.

What would be a good way to determine how warm these can safely operate?

Just the fact that the loads are under the 150W rating should be enough regardless of warmth to the touch.

Thanks

If they are too hot to touch I would reach out to Lutron, discuss the details, and see if they can get you an exact temperature to be concerned about. If they think there is no concern, then relay that to the homeowner and offer to upgrade them to the DVCL-253 at their expense if they desire.
