Direct Burial Cat 5E???

I am working on a job with a vast amount of site lighting. It show about 2000' feet of direct burial cat 5E. Can you put this cable directly in the ground without a raceway?

You can buy CAT 5e that is specifically made for direct bury ($$$). Manufacturer's don't recommend burying regular cat 5e with no conduit protection though.

I was quoted 250.00 a thousand for it. Seems cheap.

there are several types of direct burial cat5e. youve got flooded (filled with sticky goo that seals any cuts in the jacket to keep water out), non flooded, and a couple different types with an overall metal armor, flooded and unflooded. I would install conduit then use a non flooded cat5 inside that. (flooded would be better but is a pain to work with)

If the cat5 is actually carrying Ethernet, does the job take into account the length limits (330ft between active devices)? You -can- go over that limit under some circumstances, but some things just won't work.

It is for lighting control and goes to from lighting control panels to the master lighting control panel.
