Anyone know of a good direct burial splice for bare copper wire #6. Yes I know what you're going to say but this is in an RV park for which the NEC permits the equipment ground to be bare and direct buried.
Hi Sam,
Direct Burial wiring needing repair has shown that heavy traffic over any shallow trench soil condition will generally cause problems at splice joints not having encased protection. A failure at the joint can be avoided by sliding a plastic sleeve over the spliced joint area and injecting the tube filled with a silicone sealer (similar to a well drillers Stakon butt splice kit) at least 4" on both sides of the joint.
Shrink sleeve butt splices, Kearneys, wire nuts, and tape covered solder splices all fail to shallow burial soil pressure compaction eventually. A good source of reference is a deep well submersible splice method even though the connection is a DB condition, it is more a mechanical concern. rbj
