I'm the cheif engineer in the hotel industry. I've been asked to direct wire make-up mirrors to a gfci. Isn't this against the nec?

I told my supervisor that if you direct wire to a gfci the device would not be protected.

Am I correct?

First, the NEC only requires GFCI protection for receptacles. Lights, fans, makeup mirrors, and other components do not require GFCI protection.

Secondly, anything that is (correctly) wired on the load side of a GFCI will be protected by the GFCI circuitry.

Third, just for my information, since I don?t know what ?Chief Engineer? means in your context, will you be performing this wiring change yourself? Or are you the person in charge of the facility, and will you be assigning the installation work to a licensed electrician?
