Hello,
I have a situation where in order to minimize the
disruption of an apartment complex parking lot, I am specifying that 4" HDPE service conduit be directionally bored. Does the code requirement for warning tape 12" above an underground electrical service apply where we are using directional boring instead of trenching?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Directional boring and warning ribbon

While, I believe that the hazard is the same no matter what installation method was used, the code does not requrie a warning ribbon for service conductors that are installed by "direction boring".

Re: Directional boring and warning ribbon

300.5(D)(3) Service Conductors. Underground service conductors that are not encased in concrete and that are buried 450 mm (18 in.) or more below grade shall have their location identified by a warning ribbon that is placed in the trench at least 300 mm (12 in.) above the underground installation.

Are these service conductors going to be owned by an electric utility? If they are, their installation rules (normally based on and covered by the NESC) will apply to your installation.

If this is behind a primary metered service, this would be a feeder and this section would not apply even if it were open trenched. ;)
