I was asked this weekend to check out the grounding on a Directv system for a friend. His receiver turns on and off unexpectedly. He took it in, had it checked out, and the techy said it was ok. Told him it was in his grounding system...... The cable is grounded to the dish and receiver with a separate ground wire in the coax. His receptical has a good ground. The dish is mounted on a wood pole, should it have a separate earth ground? Or any ideas?

Grounding nor bonding will correct a problem with the receiver turning off and on. Grounding of the system plays no part in the operational function of the unit. Many manufacturers of equipment, especially electronic equipment, like to use the "bad ground" excuse when their equipment doesn't work properly.

Regardless, the dish certainly needs to be grounded to earth and bonded to the electrical service grounding electrode system. Again, this will not correct his receiver problem.

Agree, grounding and bonding has nothing to do with normal operation of the unit. The grounding and bonding is for safety in the event of lightning strike, electrical insulation failure inside the unit, or accidental contact with high voltages.
