I have a new metal shaker that I have to o.k. for use. The question is, it has 3 levels of steel balcony walkways and there are 480v. disconnects on the machine in various places of the walkway. The railing is made of 2'' steel tubing. The clearance from disconnect to railing is 36", I told them it had to be 42" being that the railing is considered a grounded surface, who is right? Thanks in advance for any information, I follow this forum alot to better do my job and this forum has helped me alot. As a matter of fact, yesterday I was talking to some of our electricians about an issue. I told them I found out a good spot to find the answers to the ones I can't find in the code book. They knew the answer right away, they said you must be going to Mike Holt's web-site, BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!

No problem, all you have to do is comply with 110.26(A) Working Space. Working space for equipment operating at 600 volts, nominal, or less to ground and likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized shall comply with the dimensions of 110.26(A)(1), (A)(2), and (A)(3) or as required or permitted elsewhere in this Code.

If the equipment will never be opened while energized, 110.26 does not apply.

If the equipment will be opened while energized, they have to build a bubble out away from the disconnect so the 3 ft 6 in. can be obtained.
