Can the disconnect for a 120V air handler / remote AC be a 15A single pole switch mounted to the unit as in furnace applications? Or do I need a disconnect on the unit if the panel is in sight of the unit? Please advise. Thanks

Re: disconnect for air handler/remote AC

Within sight is 50' feet or less. If you meet this requirement and the motor is 1/8 HP or less than no disconnect is needed. If not, a single pole snap switch may be used if it meets the requirements of 430.109(C).

Re: disconnect for air handler/remote AC

You have to see if mechanical code allows this here we can have a unit within sight of panel and pass electrical but in one area HVAC will fail it because thier code says disc within 6 ft of unit

Re: disconnect for air handler/remote AC

In one jurisdiction we can have the psnel within sight or 50 ft.,but HVAC code says it must be adjacent to the unit(means of disc,)So who is at faukt and who pays to retro the new disc adjacent to unit?????We pass but they dont

Re: disconnect for air handler/remote AC

If you mount directly to the ac equipment make sure you do not attach to any panel which might require removal to service equipment or machinery inside.

Can't seem to find in the International Mechanical Code (2000 or 2003) were it says that a disconnect for an a/c is any different then the electrical code. In fact it refers you to the ICC Electrical Code, My states reverts that to the NFPA 70.
