Can a disconnect switch be located within a open shaft serving a wheelchair platform lift? The platform lift enters from a corridor and goes up to an open lanai area so the
shaft is open to the outside. The wheelchair platform lift equipment is located along the shaft wall. I'm being told that the disconnect must be located outside of the shaft
but per NEC article 620.51(C) it states "The disconnecting means shall be located where it is readily accessible to qualified persons". Since it is an open shaft, I believe
that qualifies as a readily accessible location. Am I correct?

Where in the shaft will the disconnect be located ?
Is the "open shaft" you are referring to, a building
type of shaft, or is it some type of lift frame of the
lift itself?.....Please clarify what you mean by
"open shaft"......Thanks !

In particular, pay attention to whether the lift platform will block access to the disconnect when it is in an intermediate position as well as when it is at either extreme. If the lift jams and needs to be repaired, you do not want the disconnect to be blocked.

Good point, however, ...we have an ADA platform lift
in our bldg., and it has 3 separate, non-electrical release
mechanisms that will lower the lift in case or power failure.
The disco is inside a cabinet mounted to the side of the lift
frame......So technically, the disco could be mounted inside
the shaft,
"IF" the shaft is the frame of the lift itself.

We have even had opportunity to check out the release
mechanisms recently, when one of the cleaning crew
became stuck on the lift......The power did a "hiccup" and
the lift itself lost power.......We called a service tech. and
they showed us where the manual release mechanisms
were.
