Is there a definite requirement for a machine in a warehouse for a disconnect? What if the panel is say 20 feet away from the service panel? Then is no disconnect required ? Thank you.

There are allowable circumstances in which a breaker in a panel, WITH A LOCKING PROVISION, can be used in lieu of a "within sight" disconnect, yes. Read 430.102 very thoroughly, including the exceptions and the conditions for the exceptions.

And separately, the term "within sight" is defined in article 100 as being 15m (roughly 50ft) and "visible" which is generally accepted to mean "not around a corner or blocked from view".

Jraef is correct, No disconnect as long as it is "with-in 50ft for sight" lack thereof of course. Exception to that rule is like he said, around a corner and so on.
