Can anyone tell me what if any code applies to putting a/the disconnect directly on an air conditioning unit itself in a residential setting.

110.3(B) would come to mind....but more directly, 440.14.

Bear in mind also, if you pierce the linesets whilst mounting to the housing, your gonna have some expalining to do.

I don't know what a lineset is, but this reminded me of a good story I'll share.

10-12 years ago or so, long day, big AC condenser unit on a hot roof. 5:00 coming fast. Only thing left to do is mount the disco onto the unit- it's liquidtite in and out and everything has already been wired up all around.

I grab the dewalt cordless with the 5/16" in place and pick up a few 1" long self tapers. One at the top of the disco, one into the lower right corner, last screw of the day (and of the job) into the lower left corner, and I hear the dreaded sound that freon makes when it's leaking into the atmosphere.

I freeze in pain, turn white in the face, and look at the HVAC guy standing 10 feet away by the ladder. His jaw is on the roof. "Uh... can you, er, fix that?" I'd hit one of those 180 degree loops in the copper line, right up against the fins even.

"Just go. Now."

I don't know how he managed to fix it. I left and never heard another thing about it, but to this day he mounts the disco when we're on a job together... But you'll never make that mistake twice.

The coils is ultimately where the linesets get attached to....and what you screwed through

I used the term "lineset" to also encompass the coils.
