Disconnect question....

Residential home.
200A Service
200A meter socket with main disconnect located on exterior of home.
200A panel located in the home.
100A panel located in attached garage.

Question:
I was told that the 200A panel inside the home cannot have a main breaker. I was told the panel had to be a main lug panel. Is it against code to have a main breaker on this panel?

We don`t even buy MLO panels since we buy main breakers panels in bulk.It`s cheaper to use these than order MLO panels.Oh welcome to the trade.

In case you don't have a code book yet here is the code on this:


408.16 Overcurrent Protection.
(A) Lighting and Appliance Branch-Circuit Panelboard Individually Protected. Each lighting and appliance branch-circuit panelboard shall be individually protected on the supply side by not more than two main circuit breakers or two sets of fuses having a combined rating not greater than that of the panelboard.
I added the bold to highlight the allowance of two main breakers. :)

That statement about two mains is in reference to them being in a single enclosure (paralled feed, seperate loads) not to being in series.

I agree with Jim,the code statement limits the # of movements it takes to disconnect the power from the panel.In this case,although there are 2 breakers,they are in series and it only takes (1 movement)to shut the power off.I also agree with Hurk,not a violation but not necessary in this case.
BTW,Is there a limit to the # of disconnects a single feeder to a panel can have? I don't know of any code rule that limits this.
