Hello All:

I'm working on a project where a 1/2HP, 208V/1PH pump is located outside a data center facility in a manhole. The controller with integral disconnect is located in enclosed mechanical yard by the entry door which make the disconnect not within sight of the motor. If the disconnect or the upstream breaker in the panelboard is lockable in the open position, would still require us to provide a disconnect within sight of the pump? Any thoughts?

Thanks,

In my opinion no, unless the AHJ believes either of these conditions in the exception to 430.102(B) applies.

(a) Where such a location of the disconnecting means
for the motor is impracticable or introduces additional or
increased hazards to persons or property

(b) In industrial installations, with written safety procedures,
where conditions of maintenance and supervision
ensure that only qualified persons service the equipment

Why not make it cord and plug connected?
